Openreach Initiates Full Fibre Broadband Expansion in Falkirk and Grangemouth

Openreach, the digital network business, is embarking on a transformative journey to bring ultrafast broadband to Falkirk, promising residents and businesses access to some of the fastest and most reliable internet speeds in the UK.

This monumental full fibre broadband upgrade will enable thousands of local users to connect multiple devices at gigabit-capable speeds, empowering businesses to flourish online and remain competitive in the digital age. The project’s scope encompasses the majority of homes and businesses in Falkirk, with plans to extend the full fibre network to other areas within the local authority, including Stenhousemuir, Shieldhill, and Larbert. Impressively, over 10,000 households and businesses across the district can already migrate to Openreach’s new network.

Full fibre broadband is synonymous with enhanced reliability, resilience, and future-proof connectivity. It offers fewer disruptions, more predictable and consistent speeds, and the capacity to effortlessly accommodate escalating data demands.

Councillor Cecil Meiklejohn, leader of Falkirk Council, emphasized the growing necessity of ultrafast broadband access and expressed encouragement for the proposed work across multiple areas in the Falkirk district. She anticipates numerous advantages for both residents and businesses as the program unfolds.

Local residents can leverage the postcode checker tool to stay updated on the latest plans for their area and receive progress notifications as the build-out advances.

Robert Thorburn, partnership director for Openreach Scotland, clarified the extensive effort underway to introduce ultrafast broadband to Falkirk and its surroundings. He assured residents of minimal disruptions and explained the strategic use of existing ducts and poles to minimize roadworks and new street installations. However, in some cases, new infrastructure may be required to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Thorburn also highlighted the incorporation of advanced technology, such as underground cameras for duct inspections, which aids in identifying blockages and minimizes the need for street excavation.

Adding to the excitement, Grangemouth will join the expansion plans, amplifying Openreach’s commitment to enhancing connectivity in the region. Their partnership with Kier, a key player in infrastructure delivery, underscores their dedication to making superior broadband infrastructure accessible to the communities in and around Falkirk.

David Diskin, managing director of Kier’s telecoms business, expressed pride in contributing to Openreach’s full fibre rollout, ensuring that Falkirk and its neighboring areas have the broadband infrastructure they rightfully deserve.
