Ogi Implements Tailored Telecoms Training Program for Engineers

Ogi has launched a new bespoke 8-week telecoms training program designed to equip its engineers with the skills and knowledge necessary for their roles within the Service Operations division.

The comprehensive training initiative, conducted in-house, combines regulatory e-learning modules, peer-led sessions, and practical assessments facilitated by Future Networks Training (FNT). Engineers undergo a structured induction program, starting with on-the-job learning alongside a designated ‘buddy’ and progressing through a series of classroom-style sessions covering regulatory compliance, health and safety protocols, and customer service essentials.

The program culminates in a final five-day ‘last mile’ validation course at FNT’s specialized training facility near Bristol, where engineers are immersed in real-world scenarios, including block paving, soft verge and asphalt reinstatement, work at height, and optical network terminal (ONT) connections.

Louise Healey, Director of Service Operations at Ogi, emphasized the program’s focus on fostering a collaborative team environment and instilling a deep understanding of the company’s culture and commitment to excellent customer service.

For Tom Begley, one of the first graduates of the program, the hands-on approach and early exposure to fieldwork have been instrumental in understanding the expectations of the role and building trust within the team.

“It’s a really great way to get to know the business, and the standard of work that’s expected of me. It’s also helpful that we get to go out and about quickly, getting our hands dirty more or less from day one.

“I feel like the trust is there, and it’s up to me to prove myself in the ‘real world’ with people who actually do the job – and not just those who teach about it.”

Louise Mumford, Leading and Development Lead at Ogi, highlighted: “Here at Ogi we want to make sure our engineers have a meaningful learning experience from day one; one that takes them beyond the classroom and into the field as soon as possible, providing an immersive experience filled with real-to-life scenarios.

“This new peer-led programme brings together the key skills and knowledge needed by our engineers, side-by-side with the teamwork and cultural motivators that are specific to Ogi. Developing this programme in-house has enabled us to create a learning experience that enriches the development of our engineers and ultimately makes sure we can retain talent for the long-term.”

With an additional 60 years of combined external experience in the telecoms industry brought by FNT, Ogi’s training program sets the stage for future initiatives, underscoring the company’s dedication to continuous learning and talent development.
