Freedom Fibre has begun works to introduce full-fibre connectivity to homes and businesses in North Shropshire, supported by the UK government’s ambitious £5 billion Project Gigabit initiative.
Securing a chunky £24 million government contract in May 2023, Freedom Fibre committed to linking 12,000 rural premises. In an even more ambitious move, they have extended their reach to an additional 60,000 premises, promising to upgrade broadband speeds and reliability for local residents and business owners.
After months of planning and thorough surveys, the groundwork for integrating homes and businesses into Freedom Fibre’s lightning-fast, full-fibre network commenced this March 2024, with completion anticipated by the end of 2026.
Neil McArthur MBE, Chief Executive Officer of Freedom Fibre, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are delighted to be rolling out our lightning-fast, full-fibre network across North Shropshire. This investment will be transformational, unleashing so much potential for residents and businesses alike.”
Digital Infrastructure Minister Julia Lopez also hailed the development, remarking, “With a £24 million boost from the UK Government, North Shropshire is poised for a digital revolution. Lightning-fast, reliable broadband will connect thousands of rural homes and businesses, ushering in a new era of opportunity and economic growth for the region”
“As part of Project Gigabit, we’re rolling out gigabit-capable networks faster than any other country in Europe, putting an end to buffering and bad connections. It’s great to see how our plan for better broadband is helping rural Shropshire transform, with huge leaps in available internet speeds now on their way to the most hard-to-reach homes and businesses”.
As part of their social responsibility efforts, Freedom Fibre has pledged various initiatives, including tree planting, volunteer days, and financial backing for community projects focusing on sustainability and social welfare. You can read more here.
As a network builder, Freedom Fibre will collaborate with multiple internet service providers like TalkTalk and Fusion Fibre to support the penetration of these new properties.
