CityFibre, the UK’s leading independent full fibre platform, recently hosted a visit by the Rt Hon Dame Rosie Winterton DBE, Member of Parliament for Doncaster Central, to their ongoing full fibre network construction in Edenthorpe. This £25 million citywide project aims to transform Doncaster’s digital connectivity.
During her visit, representatives from CityFibre and their build partner Heneghans introduced Dame Winterton to full fibre digital infrastructure, offering demonstrations of the typical construction process, including excavation and reinstatement.
Full fibre networks, unlike most of the current digital infrastructure, utilize 100% fibre optic technology to transmit data at lightning-fast speeds from homes to the point of connection. This results in download and upload speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps, virtually limitless bandwidth, and dependable connectivity.
Natalie Ward, CityFibre’s Area Manager for Doncaster, expressed her pleasure at welcoming Dame Winterton and highlighted the critical role of digital infrastructure in delivering high-speed and reliable broadband services. Recent research by Hatch indicates that in Doncaster alone, CityFibre’s network is expected to unlock £215 million in productivity and innovation, along with a £125 million increase in property values.
The Rt Hon Dame Rosie Winterton, DBE, commented on the vast potential benefits of this investment for Doncaster and local communities, emphasizing her delight in gaining insight into the significant work required for infrastructure projects of this scale.
Construction of the network is carried out by CityFibre’s build partner Heneghans on behalf of CityFibre. The team employs various construction methods while closely collaborating with Doncaster Council and local communities to ensure a rapid rollout while minimizing potential disruptions.
As each neighborhood’s network is completed, CityFibre designates homes as ‘ready for service,’ allowing residents to choose full fibre-enabled broadband services as soon as they become available.
In Doncaster, customers can subscribe to services from UK launch partner Vodafone, as well as Zen, Air Broadband, EdenOak Ltd, Giganet, IDnet, Octaplus, Pure, Quickline, TalkTalk, Trunk, and Yayzi, with additional providers expected to join the network soon.
