Airband, the rural broadband specialist, has reached a remarkable milestone in its mission to revolutionize broadband access in Worcestershire, its home county. They’ve successfully laid an impressive 134 kilometers of fiber across the county, extending their reach to some of the most remote areas.
To put this achievement in perspective, envision lining up a staggering 744,445 bottles of the world-famous Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce end-to-end, or circling the cloister of Worcester Cathedral 1,340 times. Such a colossal distance highlights the significant effort Airband has invested in bridging the digital divide.
While Birmingham and London may be just a short drive or train ride away from Worcestershire, the broadband experience in rural parts of the county has often been lightyears behind. Airband is determined to change this.
Redmond Peel, Airband’s CEO, expressed his commitment, saying, “Having lived in Worcester for over 30 years, and headquartered Airband in Worcestershire since the company was founded in 2009, my personal motivation to improve rural communities’ access to better broadband has been stronger on our doorstep than any other region we operate in. Our fiber and wireless broadband networks have already transformed connectivity for thousands of people in the county, and here at Airband, we’ve got exciting plans to bring faster and more reliable broadband to even more homes and businesses.”
Currently, thanks to Airband, around 7,000 homes and businesses in Worcestershire have access to broadband speeds that urban residents take for granted. However, their ambitions don’t stop here. Airband has plans to deploy an additional 151 kilometers of fiber in 2023, bringing hyperfast fiber broadband connectivity to approximately 6,000 more homes and businesses. They aim to extend this service to a further 15,000 locations by the summer of 2024.
