CityFibre, the UK’s largest independent full fibre platform, has initiated construction work to enhance Great Yarmouth’s digital infrastructure with a full fibre network in the Southtown and Cobham area. This investment, exceeding £15 million, aims to provide fast, reliable, and future-proof full fibre connectivity to homes and businesses in Great Yarmouth, ensuring their data needs are met for decades to come.
The local rollout is managed by Pod-Trak in collaboration with CityFibre, Norfolk County Council, and Great Yarmouth Borough Council, with a focus on minimizing disruption. Work crews will only be present in each area for a few days at a time, and residents will receive advance notice of any construction activities. The first services are expected to go live as each area is completed.
Charles Kitchin, CityFibre’s Area Manager for Great Yarmouth, emphasized the positive impact of this infrastructure upgrade, stating that it would enable the community to thrive in the digital age by providing access to lightning-fast and reliable internet services. He also acknowledged that while there might be short-term disruptions, the long-term benefits would be significant.
Full fibre networks use 100% fibre optics to transmit data at lightning speed from homes to the point of connection, delivering speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps for both uploads and downloads, along with near-limitless bandwidth and dependable connectivity.
In addition to offering rapid entertainment access, full fibre connectivity is expected to generate various economic benefits, such as enhanced productivity and innovation.
A spokesperson for Great Yarmouth Borough Council welcomed the news, emphasizing the critical role of robust digital connectivity in business innovation and productivity, particularly as it opens new economic opportunities for the town.
Once the new network becomes operational in Great Yarmouth, customers will have access to full fibre services from various providers, including CityFibre’s UK launch partner, Vodafone, along with TalkTalk, Zen, Giganet, and IDNet. Other providers are anticipated to join the network in the near future.
