Virgin Media has some exciting news for the Wirral: 24,000 more homes and businesses can now access their gigabit broadband services. If you’re in Wirral, you can now sign up for services like Gig2 broadband, which offers blistering speeds of 2Gbps. That’s a whopping 25 times faster than the local average! This expansion is thanks to a completed project to bring full fibre connections to the area, part of nexfibre’s massive £4.5 billion investment to deliver high-speed fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connections to 5 million UK homes by 2026. Nexfibre recently celebrated reaching a milestone of one million premises passed and ready for service.
Virgin Media O2 is leveraging this next-gen network to offer its broadband and TV Stream services in the area. Julie Agnew, Managing Director of Fixed Network Expansion at Virgin Media O2, is thrilled. “24,000 more homes in Wirral can now feel the benefit of Virgin Media’s services,” she said. “With speeds up to 25 times faster than the local average, you can rest assured that whatever you’re doing online, your service won’t slow you down.”
Rajiv Datta, CEO at nexfibre, echoed the excitement. “Nexfibre’s multi-million-pound investment in Wirral will enable thousands of households and businesses to access the benefits of full fibre broadband, enhancing their participation in the local economy and community.”
Virgin Media O2 is leading the UK’s gigabit revolution, with 1,000Mbps+ speeds available across its entire network. They invest about £2 billion a year in their networks and services and are on a mission to upgrade their entire fixed network to FTTH technology.
But it’s not just about ultrafast broadband. Virgin Media O2’s mobile network covers 99% of the UK’s population with 4G, and they’re rolling out 5G to more areas. Nexfibre is a joint venture between InfraVia Capital Partners, Liberty Global, and Telefónica, with £4.5 billion in equity and debt investment. They aim to roll out fibre to 5 million homes not currently served by Virgin Media O2 by 2026, with the potential to expand to another 2 million homes. Together, nexfibre and Virgin Media O2 will cover up to 23 million premises, or around 80% of the UK, by the end of the decade.
