In a pioneering move, Openreach has ushered in a new era of digital connectivity on the Hebridean isle of Jura, enabling the first 100 homes and businesses to access some of the fastest and most reliable broadband services in the UK. This development is made possible through joint voucher funding from the UK and Scottish governments.
The inauguration of Openreach’s full fibre network on Jura signifies a technological leap for the island, empowering local residents to connect multiple devices at gigabit-capable speeds. The initiative, backed by the UK Government’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme and the Scottish Government’s Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme, alongside standard funding from Openreach, promises transformative benefits for the community.
As engineers continue their groundwork on the island’s full fibre network, more properties, totaling around 200, are set to benefit from the upgrade before Christmas. This concerted effort aims to solidify Jura’s digital infrastructure, supporting businesses and residents for decades to come.
Robert Thorburn, Openreach Partnership Director for Scotland, acknowledged the collaborative efforts of islanders in making this digital transformation possible. He emphasized that the ultrafast broadband installation process is streamlined, with residents needing to place an order with their chosen service provider, and Openreach taking care of the rest.
“Ultrafast, ultra-reliable broadband will provide numerous benefits,” Thorburn highlighted. “Transformative connectivity helps make communities sustainable – people can stay local and take full advantage of online opportunities.”
UK Government Minister for Data and Digital Infrastructure, Sir John Whittingdale, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, emphasizing the UK Government’s commitment to bringing high-speed connectivity to every corner of the country by 2030. He lauded the positive impact on the remote community of Jura, enabling access to first-class broadband.
Scottish Government Innovation Minister Richard Lochhead highlighted the broader investment in connectivity, transforming how people on Jura work, socialize, and visit. The Scottish 4G Infill programme, providing 4G coverage to businesses and residents, and the R100 Scottish broadband voucher scheme were cited as integral components of this initiative, ensuring that no one is left behind in building a stronger economy.
