CityFibre, the UK’s largest independent full fibre platform, has reached a significant milestone in its £62 million project to enhance Newcastle’s digital connectivity. The company has successfully laid 415km of full fibre internet beneath the city streets, enough to circle St. James’ Park football stadium approximately 1,200 times.
Paul Wakefield, CityFibre’s Area Manager for Newcastle, expressed the scale and pace of the project, emphasizing how it will transform Newcastle into one of the best-connected cities in the UK. He underlined the growing importance of digital infrastructure in daily life and the benefits it provides, such as lightning-fast, greener, and more reliable broadband.
Newcastle joins the list of locations in the UK benefiting from CityFibre’s nationwide full fibre rollout. This initiative aims to provide improved broadband infrastructure to approximately eight million UK households and 800,000 businesses.
GCU, CityFibre’s build partner in Newcastle, is actively working in various parts of the city, including South Heaton, East Denton, Fawdon, Gosforth, Bridgewater, Benwell Grange, and areas surrounding the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Newcastle University. Significant progress has already been made in areas such as Gosforth, Kenton, Walkergate, Walker, and Arthur’s Hill, with more developments underway.
As each neighborhood’s network nears completion, CityFibre will designate the homes as ‘ready for service,’ enabling residents to connect to full fibre-enabled broadband services as soon as they become available.
In Newcastle, customers have the option to sign up for services from Vodafone, TalkTalk, Giganet, Zen, and other providers, offering a variety of choices to meet their broadband needs.
